The association
was founded on July 10, 2001. After a long and difficult search, we were finally able to rent space from the City of Tübingen in February 2004 at Alexpark in the southern part of the city—specifically, the so-called Texas Bar. In addition to our open café meetups, we organized a variety of other events, such as a silver-smithing course for parents and schoolchildren, a torchlight walk in November, and community barbecues in Alexpark.
In October 2004, the Epplehaus children’s group moved into our space, joined the association, and renamed itself Südstadtstrolche.
As the building at Alexpark was scheduled for demolition, we soon had to start looking for a new location. On September 10, 2005, we moved to Eugenstraße 37. These new rooms were larger and more centrally located, though the courtyard entrance made it difficult for newcomers to find us.
At Eugenstraße, we were able to expand our open cafés, organize children’s discos and carnival celebrations, and offer a drumming course. Due to the great interest in our programs, the space quickly became too small again, and we began planning our next move.
After an intensive renovation phase—with the help of many dedicated volunteers and patient craftspeople—we moved in November 2007 to our current location at Lorettoplatz (on Lilli-Zapf-Straße). In September 2007, our second supervised playgroup, the Lorettofüchse, was founded.
For the first time, the playgroups had their own dedicated room, which allowed the open cafés to take place simultaneously.
In addition to the open café meetups, new offerings such as afternoon language cafés and baby brunches have been established. Please check our program to see all that we offer.
